Sugar is linked to various diseases and has earned a bad name for playing a role in the rise in obesity across the world. So the first piece of advice you get while trying to lose weight would be to cut down on your sugar intake. It might sound like an easy task, but it is really difficult to manage your sugar cravings. As per science, craving for sugar is driven by your brain and is not a requirement of the body. But is it really important to give up on sweets when trying to shed some kilos? Let’s find out:

It is fine if you take a bite of chocolate when you want to have something sweet. But if you binge eat it then all your weight loss effort will go in vain. Dr. Priyanka Rohtagi, Chief Clinical Nutritionist, Apollo Hospitals shares, “Sugar contains empty calories and the moment you have it, your blood sugar level goes up. This also increases your craving for sugar.” She says that it is best to have naturally sweet food items like fruits and yogurt.

03 /9 Jaggery and honey

Jaggery and honey can be a good substitute for sugar when trying to lose weight. They have numerous health benefits and contain fewer calories. But you should have it in a limited quantity, as having anything in excess can be harmful to your health. As per the nutritionist, they are not as bad as sugar. A little glazing of honey or a pinch of powdered jaggery on your dessert would be a good idea.
