Hill’s Recalls Science Diet, Prescription Dog Food

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hill’s Pet Nutrition is recalling some of its canned dog food and prescription dog food products because of elevated levels of vitamin D.

  • Recall only affects canned dog food
  • Investigation found supplier error led to excessive vitamin D
  • Customers should return unopened cans for a refund

The FDA says elevated Vitamin D levels can cause a dog to vomit, lose its appetite, drool excessively, and have issues with increased thirst and urination. It can also lead to kidney issues. If your pet is showing signs of any of these issues, contact your veterinarian.

Hill’s says the issue was discovered after getting a complaint about a dog with elevated vitamin D levels. The company says the issue was caused by supplier error.

The recall affects specific lot numbers of Hill’s Science Diet, and Hill’s Prescription Diet in the following varieties:

A complete list of affected products is available on the FDA website. The recall only affects canned dog food, not dry food or cat food.

Pet parents who use these products should stop feeding them, and return unopened cans to your retailer for a refund. You can also call Hill’s at 1-800-445-5777, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. central time.

Hills’s Pet Nutrition food is sold nationwide at retailers and at veterinary offices.
