What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Like all coffee lovers, Dave Asprey enjoyed drinking coffee since he was a young man. He said it made him feel good, but he’d crash after drinking it. This pattern continued to the point where he stopped drinking coffee for five years.

The Story Behind Bulletproof Coffee
Bulletproof Coffee BPC came about when creator Dave Asprey found himself out of energy during a high altitude trek in the mountains of Tibet in 2004. He found his way to a guesthouse where a native handed him a cup of yak-butter tea. He found that it was an instant energy-booster and acted like a neuro-stimulant to clear his mind and thinking. Bulletproof Coffee Ingredients
Asprey claims that his Bulletproof Coffee is with toxin-free beans that are much better, compared to all the other beans. Brain octane oil, he says, is 18 times stronger than coconut oil because he makes it with C8 (caprylic acid) MCT oil. It’s triple-distilled and only comes from coconut oil, unlike other MCT oils that come from palm oil.
He also points out that most companies producing MCT oil use solvents and bleach to clean and deodorize their oils but Brain Octane only uses earthen clay.
Coffee is a drink that we make from roasted coffee beans. Coffee allegedly contains a variety of benefits, including weight loss and cardiovascular support.
Coffee generally has some essential nutrients like B vitamins, potassium, and manganese. Coffee also acts as an antioxidant, maintaining mental clarity.
The BMJ published a report saying “coffee consumption seems generally safe within usual levels of intake, with summary estimates indicating largest risk reduction for various health outcomes at three to four cups a day, and more likely to benefit health than harm,” but goes on to say that, “Robust randomised controlled trials are needed to understand whether the observed associations are causal.”
We’ll touch on this a bit later on, but right now we don’t see much in terms of solid evidence backing coffee as a “cognitive enhancer.”

Coconut is high in calories. “You can’t just add it to your diet without cutting back elsewhere and expect to lose weight…” It goes on to talk about coconut oil’s ability to enhance cognitive function, pointing out that there is no reliable research backing this claim.

Other Bulletproof Coffee Ingredients
MCT is short for medium chain triglycerides, which are fatty acids found in foods and used by the body for energy. Medium chain means it is made of between 6-11 carbon atoms per chain, making it easier for the body to break down and process as opposed to a long chain of 12 or more carbon atoms that are found in most high carbohydrate foods. They also do not require other enzymes in your body to be broken down and absorbed, such as insulin.
MCTs are found in tropical oils such as coconut oil and palm kernel oil. Most of what you see on the shelf will be derived from coconut oil since there are issues with humane and sustainable sourcing regarding palm kernel oil.
There are three main components, depending on the number of carbon atoms. C6, C8, and C10 are the most common, known as caproic acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid respectively. C8 makes up the majority of the MCT oil at about 12% and has anti-microbial properties that can help maintain a healthy digestive tract.
It works to keep out bacteria that may be harmful but also maintains a balance with the good bacteria already present in the intestinal tract. C6 and C8 are also the most efficient fatty acids for your body to turn into ketones for energy, but C6 can cause an intestinal upset that leads to bouts of diarrhea, especially in those already susceptible to food sensitivities. C10 is just a bit slower but still an efficient source for the liver to create ketones.
Since MCT’s are not usually found in the everyday foods of the American diet, the body can have a reaction when they are introduced. Common side effects include gas, bloating, and diarrhea. When adding the oil, such as with a ketogenic diet or to supplement fat-digesting enzymes, it is best to ” start small with the MCT oil, which used to be given to hospital patients lacking enzymes to digest fat. It can wreck your digestive tract,” Mr. Mullen said in an interview in the New York Times regarding the use of the oil in a Bulletproof type of coffee.
According to the New York Times, there are no long-term studies to confirm that MCT oil causes damage to the digestive system. However, Epilepsia reports that there can be side effects if care is not taken when introducing it into your diet. This is due to the easily digested C6 chain.
As if Bulletproof Coffee didn’t already tout enough benefits, you can add other supplements to increase its effect. These can be added directly to the coffee or are good to take before or after you drink it because of the fat-soluble properties.
According to ScienceDirect, L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in tea.
One study published in Nutritional Neuroscience has shown that it has a perceived effect on concentration and energy, especially when paired with caffeine. Participants who were taking the l-theanine had a greater recall and were less distracted when asked to complete mental tasks than those on the placebo. Adding it to your coffee would likely improve that energy boost most people get from their morning caffeine does already. It is recommended to consume about 200mg with eight ounces of Bulletproof coffee.
According to The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, a herb used in traditional Indian medicine is known for improving memory function. It is fat soluble and is thought to work best with a fat source available, such as would be found when adding grass-fed butter and MCT oil to your Bulletproof Coffee.
Phytotherapy Research also claims that there is evidence that bacopa helps with memory function. The recommended dosage is about 300 mg per eight ounces of coffee and will be well absorbed with the additional fat and oil.
According to Drug Investigation 1993, this substance is a type of racetam, which work with brain chemistry in the creation of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter involved with memory formation and attention.

What is the French Press Method?

Alternative Sweeteners and Bulletproof Coffee
Sometimes you have a craving for something sweet, especially when switching to a butter coffee diet from your habit of loading your bitter black coffee with sugar. Several sweeteners are considered acceptable for BP Bulletproof consumption. All the alternative sweeteners come from natural plant sources but don’t have the same effect on your blood sugar as plain white sugar.
This is a combination of three sweeteners: ribose, erythritol, and monk fruit. All three are considered sweeter than white sugar, so just a little will give you the sweet taste you are looking for.
Xylitol has one less carbon atom than traditional sugars, which affects the way you metabolize it. It doesn’t spike insulin, and the effect on blood sugar is negligible. However, some experts don’t even think the ketogenic diet is the way to go. In an article in Today, they go into detail about the diet and why to avoid it: “It’s not sustainable, nor is it good for you…”
Ketosis is the metabolic process that your body begins when there aren’t enough carbohydrates to produce glucose. This process is the goal of the ketogenic diet. This should not be confused with ketoacidosis, a life threating condition where ketones build in the body, creating an acidic environment, which can damage internal organs.
Once your body uses its store of glycogen, it switches to using fat as fuel. This is a genetic response to times when food was unavailable to our Paleolithic ancestors. Fat is processed into ketones, which have more energy than glucose. Ketones are also able to pass through cell membranes without needing any help from other enzymes like insulin. The Paleo diet could be considered a caveman diet, as in you would eat what your Paleolithic ancestors would eat such as meat, vegetables, and nuts. No dairy would be allowed either since the idea is that our ancestors were foraging nomads and did not keep domestic animals for dairy products.
The Bulletproof diet does allow limited amounts of dairy, especially by using butter and ghee in coffee, which is usually added to increase the fat content. The menu is generally based around some servings of allowed foods, and counting calories are not encouraged.
Both diets encourage the consumption of food that is as close to its original form as possible. Bulletproof takes it a step further and includes cooking recommendations for certain types of food.
These diets are incredibly low in carbohydrates, particularly the highly refined carbohydrates found in bread, pasta, and cereal. The body is forced to use its fat to create energy since not enough carbs are being taken in to make glucose. This is why people generally find that they lose weight on either diet.

Another claimed benefit of Bulletproof Coffee is weight loss. Users who are on the ketogenic diet typically drink this coffee because it’s designed to keep you feeling full for long periods.
Studies have shown that MCT oil is effective in promoting weight loss without any adverse effects. They’ve also found that MCT oil is more effective in promoting weight loss and preventing weight gain than LCT (Long Chain Triglycerides).
Another study by the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics pointed to weight loss, but more research was needed: “Replacement of LCTs with MCTs in the diet could potentially induce modest reductions in body weight and composition without adversely affecting lipid profiles. It’s no surprise that caffeine can aid with weight loss, but the exact formula of this product has no research behind it.

Mycotoxins come from fungi and molds that can form on grains and legumes, much like coffee beans. They can be thought of as fungal poisons. They are more commonly found in hot and humid climates, where many beans are purchased. They feed off the carbohydrates found in grains, legumes, and some fruits. This is why they are likely to be found in alcoholic beverages. There are many types of mycotoxins, and some fungi and molds can produce more than one type.

Beans may not be dried completely using the previous dry processing method and mold may grow on the beans.

Since Dave Asprey emphasizes the quality of ingredients in his Bulletproof Coffee, we’re going to look at what science has to say about his claims.
Bulletproof Coffee Beans
Bulletproof’s entire blog stresses the impact of mycotoxins in coffee and how their coffee beans are “certified clean” and lab-tested.
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites that fungi produce and that occur naturally in most foods, including cereals, coffee, and groundnuts. They usually contaminate food during pre- or post-harvest periods, or during processing.
According to Carcinogenesis, Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin that frequently affects foods such as maize, groundnuts, and other dried fruits.
According to Toxins, another popular mycotoxin is called ochratoxin A (OTA), and this one is common in food products such as cereals, coffee, spices, and licorice. OTA has immunosuppressive, teratogenic, and nephrotoxic properties.
International Journal of Vitamin and Nutrition research shows that grass-fed cows produce high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in their milk and their quality also stands out compared to their conventional counterparts.
Nutrition Journal writes that “grass-fed beef tends to be lower in overall fat content, an important consideration for those consumers interested in decreasing overall fat consumption.”
There is also some evidence to suggest that butter can promote brain function.

Brain Octane Oil (MCT)
There is some evidence that MCT can help promote ketosis.
